Carrie Gerdeman

Recreation & Health Services Director

Carrie guides our REC-it program (Recreation Education Community Inclusion). DNEM’s REC-it program was established in 2018 and has served Oakland and Macomb Counties. In 2021, DNEM expanded too; DNEM took over 5 counties in the Thumb region of Michigan. Carrie will be coordinating, expanding, and developing recreation, health and wellness programs, and activities to all of our 7 counties.

Carrie has been a Recreational Therapist for 30 years; working primarily in community-based settings in Southeast Michigan. She worked for 17 years at Macomb Oakland Regional Center (MORC) where she was instrumental in developing programs in Aquatic Therapy, Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Adaptive Gardening, and the ‘Art from the Heart’ Program. Most recently, Carrie worked at The Disability Network in Flint, first as the Program Director and then Associate Director. She is most proud of the creation of ‘iKayak’, Genesee County’s first adaptive kayaking program. Carrie is passionate about community collaboration, adaptive recreation, and fun!

Carrie grew up in ‘the thumb’, lived many years in Macomb County, and currently resides in Lake Orion (home of the Dragons!).

Fun fact: Carrie enjoys many, many recreational activities! Some of which include spending time with her two teens, traveling, exercising, creating art, and being with friends.
